People who would watch Short Films:
I did some research on short films and specifically the target audience for short films i.e. those people who watch short films.
The audience for short films is less in number compared to mainstream or full length films, and short films also have a low budget, which is another reason why less people watch short films or rather would want to watch short films.
There are rare cases where the normal audience would watch short films, however there are certain groups of people who choose to watch short films for some reasons. One of those groups are investors or industry professionals, who would be in search of new talent in the form of directors, producers or writers and for that they may be looking at short films.
People who may be new in film making or wish to pursue a career in the industry may also want to watch short films and observe the codes and conventions of short films. They also might be looking for inspiration for their work and thus may watch short films for this cause.
Young people studying film making or media may also be interested to watch short films if they tend to make one. They might do this for inspiration for their own amateur media product.
It is also known that short films are mostly screened in certain film festivals to win awards. A few would be the Cannes Film Festival, Sundance Film Festival as well as events like the Oscars.
Promotion of Short Films and Youtube's role for the increase in it's popularity:
I also managed to find some interesting information about short films. I got to know that short films are mostly advertised or promoted on the internet and then uploaded on Youtube or other websites to be premiered. Short films differ from full length films in this case as full length features are promoted through television and the internet, whereas short films are rarely seen on television.
Youtube, the most well known video-sharing website, has played a very key role in the promotion and rapid increase in the popularity of short films. Since it is very easy to make a Youtube account and then upload videos, many directors or short film makers upload their videos to gain popularity and then get feedback from different people about their films. Youtube has also enabled people to watch videos on their finger tips, through the help of Youtube applications on cell phones, and so those interested in watching short films can view them on-the-go.
Why do Director's make Short Films?
Many Director's like to work independently to make short films to show their talent. Making short films allows them to work on their own and so they do things the way they want to do and make their film making abilities known to the audience.
What does it take for videos to go viral?
For a video to go viral, the story of the video should be able to captivate the audience and not just the target audience, but the maker should try to captivate all the audiences or at least the people that are most likely to watch that film. What is also essential is that it should be entertaining for the audience. Promotion and advertising is also important to make the video go viral. Originality of the idea of the video, relevance of the idea, or the message that it is sending to its viewers are important factors as well. The time span is also important, in fact, the shorter the video, the better. There is no doubt that a video can go viral, provided these factors are considered.
